University of Southern Nevada's main campus is located on Whitney Mesa in Henderson

The University of Southern Nevada (USN), located in Henderson, Nevada and South Jordan, Utah, was founded in 1999 as a private, non-profit, independent educational institution to address the health care needs of the intermountain region through innovative educational programs, scholarship, and public service.

The university strives to provide a teaching and learning environment that prepares students and residents to become competent, caring, ethical professionals and life-long learners dedicated to providing exceptional service in their chosen professions.

Originally named the Nevada College of Pharmacy, the institution launched its first degree program, the Doctor of Pharmacy, in 2001. The institution changed its name to University of Southern Nevada in 2004 to reflect its growth and plans for additional degree programs, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) which was added that same year. In 2006, in response to the extreme shortage of registered nurses in Southern Nevada and the surrounding region, USN established its College of Nursing offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program.

USN's South Jordan, Utah campus opened in 2006.

To meet the demand for health care professionals in the intermountain region, USN opened its second campus in South Jordan, Utah in 2006. Currently, the Doctor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Science in Nursing are offered at the Utah campus.

The University created its College of Dental Medicine in 2007 with its first post-doctoral residency program, Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AEODO) commencing in early 2009. The program is the first in the nation to require its residents to complete a Master of Business Administration (MBA) to ensure residents emerge from the program with not only expertise in orthodontics, but also the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business.

With an emphasis on student-centered, active learning, USN teaches using the “Block Curriculum System” rather than the traditional semester/quarter system. The system allows students to concentrate on one subject at a time enabling them to master the content. This system also necessitates that faculty provide varied instructional activities for students that supports active learning techniques and strategies, as well as accommodating different learning styles to promote high achievement.

The University’s state-of-the-art classrooms have been designed to emphasize active and cooperative learning as well as support the use of the most advanced technology in instructional activities.

In addition to supplying an educational need in the region, USN encourages the pursuit of all forms of scholarship, including discovery, teaching, integration and application.

The University of Southern Nevada is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
