A Bite of Success

October 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thank you to the Las Vegas community for coming out to the 13th Annual Bite of Las Vegas on Saturday. The Mix 94.1 FM music and food festival attracted about 40,000 people, making it a huge success.

USN’s College of Dental Medicine showcased its orthodontic services to thousands of families, many of which signed up for a free screening and consultation. The college also distributed Halloween tips for people with braces as well as travel toothbrushes with toothpaste. Hundreds of people also signed up for a drawing to win a free, orange iPod Nano. The winner was drawn today. Congratulations to 19-year-old Jennifer Liester of Las Vegas!!!

A special thanks goes out to the volunteers who braved the unusually hot October day to help decorate the college’s Halloween-themed booth and answer questions for the hundreds of visitors who inquired about orthodontic services, including Jason Roth, Angela Bigby, Joycelynn Nicholas, Xan Goodman, Dana Pachar, Candace Butler, Dr. Shaun Perryman, Dr. Kashif Ismail, Dr. Beth Yamashiro, Dr. Diane Rhee, Dr. Alana Whittaker and Dr. Jaleh Pourhamidi. Also, thanks to Sukanya Mandal and USN’s graphic designer Billy George for helping put together the materials. The success of this event would not have been realized without the help of each of these individuals.

Now enjoy some pictures from the event:

USN to Hold Summer Health Festival

May 22, 2009 · 2 Comments

University of Southern Nevada will host its Summer Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 at its College of Dental Medicine’s recently opened, state-of-the-art Orthodontic Clinic at 4 Sunset Way in Henderson (Sunset Vista Professional Park at Sunset and Mountain Vista).

IMG_9779The event will provide free orthodontic screenings and consultations for children, teens and adults by the USN College of Dental Medicine’s team of board certified faculty and licensed orthodontic residents. USN offers affordable, high-quality orthodontic services, including braces in a 12,000 square-foot classroom and clinic facility equipped with the latest in imaging technology.

IMG_9833USN pharmacy and nursing students, along with a variety of health-focused organizations will also provide free health screenings and information on common health issues, including arthritis, diabetes, immunization, cholesterol, heartburn and respiratory illnesses, and high blood pressure to educate the community on how to lead healthier lives.

“Our health festivals are a great way for our pharmacy and nursing students and orthodontic residents to provide valuable services to the community, providing practical experience for them and a great opportunity for the general public to check up on their health and learn how to prevent illness,” said USN’s Director of University Relations Barbara Wood. “This is also a wonderful way for our students and residents to showcase the quality education and training they’re receiving at USN.”

United Blood Services will be onsite accepting blood donations. According to the organization that supplies life-saving blood to Southern Nevada hospitals, the summer months are extremely difficult for blood collections due to scheduled vacations and the Valley’s hot weather. However, during the summer months the need for blood increases as the heavy traffic on our roads and highways raises the potential for accidents.

Southern Nevada area hospitals are currently using about 280 units of blood per day and not enough blood is collected to meet the demand, forcing United Blood Services to import blood. Last year 10,000 units of blood were imported to keep up with the demand.

Advance appointments for blood donation are encouraged. To schedule an appointment call 562-2166 or go online to www.bloodhero.com and type in sponsor code: UNSOUTHNV.

USN will also hold a free raffle with prizes awarded each hour during the event. Free food and drinks will be available and Mix 94.1 fm will distribute giveaways. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets will offer complimentary bottled water to all in attendance.
