Since 2004 USN has offered an MBA program for students in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program who want to obtain a dual PharmD/MBA degree.

“We have seen a growing demand at the Utah campus for our combined PharmD/MBA degree in the past few years,” said Dr. Okeleke Nzeogwu, USN MBA Program Director. “Now we want to open that MBA program to business professionals who are looking to broaden their career opportunities, develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills, or even start a business.”

USN is a private, non-profit university headquartered in Henderson, Nev. The South Jordan campus opened in 2006 with a College of Pharmacy offering a Doctor of Pharmacy degree; the Utah campus has expanded to include a College of Nursing, offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a dual PharmD/MBA degree. In 2011 it will open the first College of Dental Medicine in Utah, offering a Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD).

Professors teach using an innovative block curriculum, which allows the students to focus on one subject at a time and master each concept before moving on. The result is highly competent graduates in business and health care fields.

USN is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and the MBA program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

MBA Classes Start Friday: It’s Not Too Late To Enroll

Is your resolution for 2010 to go back to school? It’s not too late to enroll in USN’s Master of Business Administration program. Classes start on Friday, Jan. 8 and meet on Friday evenings and Saturdays, allowing you to complete our accredited MBA in just 17 months.

The new year is a great time to rethink, reinvent and repackage yourself for employment or career advancement in a struggling economy and tight employment market. USN’s MBA Program Director, Dr. Okeleke Nzeogwu, recommends the classic four “P’s” of any Marketing 101 course as a way to achieve this:

  • The Product—that is, you and me; we are the “human investment products” that companies are willing to pay for in order to satisfy their labor services needs. Investment products are goods used to produce other goods. Thus, you must begin to rethink your qualifications, work related experiences, character/personality, skills, etc. It is also important to understand why the current product (you), “as is” now, is prone to getting downsized during recessions. Start thinking of acquiring additional education, training, experience and skills that will help you deliver a new product (you) to the market place. Rethinking and reinventing yourself may take years. Dr. Nzeogwu’s first major retooling effort in the 1980s and that process took him five years, but at the end he had a terminal degree doing what I loved to do, teaching at the college-level.
  • The Price—that is, your desired salary, benefits, working conditions, and perks necessary to keep you motivated and fulfilled must match the product. For example, with just a primary school education one shouldn’t expect to command the salary (price) of a Wall Street banker. Thus, if your desired compensation does not match the product, you can rethink and reinvent yourself until you are confident that the product could realistically earn you the price that you want. Nevertheless, remember that the labor market is also global and that your competitors are not just the workers in your city and around the nation—they include workers from other countries around the world.
  • The Place—that is, the location, industry, field and career that will give you the maximum advantage for your product. In Dr. Nzeogwu’s case, he wanted to teach at the university level. In order to do that he had to rethink and reinvent the product that will fit the place—field (economics), career (teaching) and industry (education).
  • The Promotion—that is, how you will communicate (or promote) to potential employers everything about the new you (product) that you have been working on. The promotion/packaging strategies will include the applications, resume, interview, internships, impressions, salary discounts, networking, personal marketing activities, etc.

USN’s MBA program can help you accomplish the four “P’s,” with its focus on economics, finance, accounting, communication, teamwork, leadership and entrepreneurship. All of these elements help create competent and effective business leaders with the knowledge and skills essential in making well-informed and responsible business decisions.
