University recognized by the Utah Legislature for contributions to higher education

With a new name announced, and a new College of Dental Medicine opening in the fall, the Utah state legislature recognized Roseman University of Health Sciences during Tuesday’s session for its contributions to higher education in the state. Currently named University of Southern Nevada, the school will officially be renamed Roseman University of Health Sciences effective July 1.

Dr. Rosenberg (left) accepts the Official Legislative Citation from Sen. Peter Knudson on the floor of the Utah Senate.

Senator Peter Knudson of Brigham City (one of two dentists in the Utah Senate) presented Roseman University and its founders, University President Dr. Harry Rosenberg and College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Renee Coffman, with a State Legislature Official Citation in the Senate. Rep. Merlynn Newbold of South Jordan announced it to the House of Representatives.

The Citation, which was read on the floor of the Senate and signed by Senate President Michael Waddoups and Speaker of the House Rebecca Lockhart, says, “The state of Utah has long been a leader in promoting innovation in education while encouraging Utah students to pursue higher education. In 2006 Dr. Harry Rosenberg established the University of Southern Nevada’s first campus outside the state of Nevada in the city of South Jordan, opening a college of Pharmacy and a College of Nursing. The first graduating class from the South Jordan campus of the College of Pharmacy enjoyed a 100 percent success rate in passing the National Pharmacy Licensing Exam, an outstanding achievement for both the students and the University.”

Governor Gary Herbert met with representatives from Roseman University (USN), South Jordan City, Economic Development Corporation of Utah, and Utah legislators after the Citation was presented in the Senate and House.

It also recognized Roseman University as the fifth largest College of Pharmacy in the U.S. by enrollment, with over 900 total pharmacy students (250 at the Utah campus). The South Jordan campus has 39 additional students in its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN), and will enroll approximately 60 students in Utah’s first and only Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD) in the fall.

The Citation highlighted Roseman University’s accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, a non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the regional authority on educational quality and institutional effectiveness of higher education institutions in the Northwest region that includes Utah.

In addition to bringing higher education opportunities to the state of Utah, Roseman University’s construction of a new building for the College of Dental Medicine in South Jordan’s RiverPark Corporate Center will expand the campus to over 240,000 square feet, and together with equipment and finished improvements will result in an investment of over $40 million in the Utah economy.

According to the Citation, “The Utah legislature hereby recognizes…the Roseman University of Health Sciences on their success in establishing solid educational programs that help provide the state of Utah with medical and dental professionals. We commend you for your commitment to higher education in the fields of dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing, and wish you continued success in the years to come.”

The event was coordinated by South Jordan City representatives, including Council Member Leona Winger (who is a member of the Roseman University Board of Trustees), and Mayor Kent Money. Several South Jordan City Council Members, including Council Member Brian Butters and Council Member Aleta Taylor, attended the signing as well, and city officials came to speak on the importance and economic impact of the University in the state and local area.

Several Roseman University administrators and students joined Dr. Rosenberg and Dr. Coffman, including Dr. Larry Fannin, Campus Dean for the South Jordan College of Pharmacy; Dr. Marlene Luna, Campus Dean for the College of Nursing; Dr. Richard Buchanan, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine; and eight pharmacy students.

USN South Jordan MBA Program Now Enrolling

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – January 31, 2011 – For working professionals or students looking to broaden their career opportunities, start a new job, or gain the essential knowledge for starting a business, a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree can be the right step toward success.

The University of Southern Nevada’s (USN) South Jordan campus is now enrolling students in its MBA program. Students can earn an MBA in a few as nine months (for daytime programs) or 18 to 22 months (for evening programs two nights per week). And the program is a great option for professionals who live and work in the South Valley area and are looking for a closer MBA option, rather than commuting to the University of Utah or BYU to obtain their degree.

Representatives from the MBA program will be at the South Jordan campus in February and March for information sessions.

What: USN South Jordan MBA Information Sessions
Date: February 3, March 3, and March 17 (Thursdays)
Where: University of Southern Nevada South Jordan, Utah campus
Address: 10920 S. Riverfront Parkway (in the RiverPark Corporate Center)
When: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to register at www.usn.edu/mba.

Information sessions will include answers about the admission and enrollment process, campus tours, advising sessions and information about financial aid. Attendees interested in fast-track consideration can complete an application on site. Refreshments will be served, and the event is open to anyone interested in learning more about how an MBA can provide a competitive edge in a difficult job market.

Since 2004 USN has offered an MBA program for students in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program who want to obtain a dual PharmD/MBA degree.

“We have seen a growing demand at the Utah campus for our combined PharmD/MBA degree in the past few years,” said Dr. Okeleke Nzeogwu, USN MBA Program Director. “Now we want to open that MBA program to business professionals who are looking to broaden their career opportunities, develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills, or even start a business.”

USN is a private, non-profit university headquartered in Henderson, Nev. The South Jordan campus opened in 2006 with a College of Pharmacy offering a Doctor of Pharmacy degree; the Utah campus has expanded to include a College of Nursing, offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a dual PharmD/MBA degree. In 2011 it will open the first College of Dental Medicine in Utah, offering a Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD).

Professors teach using an innovative block curriculum, which allows the students to focus on one subject at a time and master each concept before moving on. The result is highly competent graduates in business and health care fields.

USN is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and the MBA program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

USN to be Renamed Roseman University of Health Sciences

USN today announced it will change its name to Roseman University of Health Sciences. The change will be effective July 1, 2011. The university’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the name change in December following a six-month name idea generation and evaluation process facilitated by an internal task force that solicited input from students, faculty, staff and alumni.

In a news release this morning, Board of Trustees Chair Diana Bond said, “The name Roseman University of Health Sciences was selected to honor our founding president, Dr. Harry Rosenberg, and College of Pharmacy Dean, Dr. Renee Coffman, two outstanding individuals who played pivotal roles in the founding of the university and its growth into a vibrant and innovative institution of higher learning. The change to a non-geographic name will also help the university as it continues its expansion in Utah and will ease confusion by differentiating it from similarly named schools in the Nevada higher education system. More importantly, it better reflects the university’s mission as a leader in transforming health care education.”

Dr. Rosenberg supports the change, saying the new name and its timing make sense as the university continues preparation to open the first pre-doctoral dental program in Utah in the Fall.

“With our tremendous growth in Utah, and particularly with the imminent launch of our Doctor of Dental Medicine program, the University of Southern Nevada name no longer accurately reflects who we are and who we serve,” said Dr. Rosenberg. “We are a health sciences university offering an unparalleled learning experience, while also delivering excellent, affordable, high-quality health care services in Nevada and Utah communities.”

The process of changing the university name is expected to take several months. A comprehensive re-branding campaign will be implemented in July when the official name change takes place.

“We look forward to developing the Roseman University of Health Sciences brand and reinforcing our mission and core values,” said Dr. Rosenberg. “We believe this is a great opportunity to showcase our innovative health sciences curriculum and our outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff.”

Regularly updated information about the name change will be posted on USN’s website.
